Joe Martino discovered his passion at the age of fourteen, when he ran his first race—a course of two four-mile loops he says “nearly killed me.” Within three years he had claimed the Western Massachusetts cross-country championship, and the year after that he ran in the very first New York City marathon. By the time he hung up his track shoes nearly forty years later, he had racked up a career total of 255 races with 96 first-place wins.

On the Run chronicles Joe’s four decades of adventures in the sport, as well as the colorful assortment of friends, coaches and colleagues he’s met along the way, including his close friendship with two of America’s greatest distance runners, Bill Rodgers and Tom Fleming, who with Joe called themselves “the Three Amigos.” Animated by the author’s dry wit and cinematic sense of detail, Martino’s “road memoir” is both informative and entertaining, and it paints an endearing portrait of New England life in the latter twentieth century.
