A love story about old doubts and new courage. For Sally, circling back to the past might deepen old wounds – or open her heart to the future. When the love of her life dies suddenly, Sally is devastated. In the wind-swept seaside cottage outside Cape Town where she and Felix had finally found happiness, she struggles to find a way to move forward without him. Though lust has dimmed since their youth, emotions burn as deep as ever. The insecurity that pushed them apart when they first met as students almost fifty years ago now haunts her again. Did he really love her? And why did they take so long to reunite? As Sally struggles to deal with the practical details of her loss, sifting through his possessions and trying to plan a way she and his children and their friends can say goodbye to Felix, memories assail her. Her search takes us from the heartache of the present back to the bliss – and conflicts – of the past. Each item leads to questions about their long journey, from the quaint college town of Grahamstown in South Africa where Felix dubbed her his “Copper Girl”, to poignant encounters in Los Angeles and New York, and back to South Africa. They track through marriage to others, unexpectedly intersecting career paths, and the birth of children. Fragments emerge from Felix’s travel journals, written before they met. It’s like hearing his voice again – a joy and a pain. More help – and added confusion – come from Felix’s daughter Joanie whom she’s come to love as her own. Working with Joanie, Sally begins to dream up a way to say farewell – a dance for Felix – that reflects the varied elements of his life, and the gifts he has left for those who loved him.
