An uncommon work in a quarter calf binding, with the original paper wraps bound in.To the front paste down is a photograph of the tablet commemorating the opening the Roman Fort Museum. Ink inscription of the date '14/11/53' to the front free end paper.To the front board, underneath the title, is 'Rt. Hon. J. Chuter Ede, 20th June 1953', suggesting that this work was bound for James Chuter Ede (1882-1965), the Labour Party politician. He was aMP for 32 years, and served as the sole Home Secretaryunder Prime MinisterClement Attlee from 1945 to 1951.This is Sir Ian Richmond's guide to the Roman fort at South Shields known as Arbeia, which is now managed by Tyne and Wear Museums as Arbeia Roman Fort and Museum. Sir Ian Archibald Richmond (1902-1965) was an English archaeologist and academic. He was Professor of the Archaeology of the Roman Empire at the University of Oxford, and a prolific excavator of Romano-British sites. His two major projects were at the Hod Hill Iron Age hillfort and Inchtuthil near Perth in Scotland. He also wrote the highly successful book Roman Britain (1955) for the Penguin series.In this work he discusses the granaries, garrisons, name and history of the site. There is also a sketch plan of the site. In a quarter calf binding, with the original paper wraps bound in. Externally, in lovely condition. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean.
