The Revised Kama Sutra created waves when it was first published almost twenty years ago. Now hailed as a classic, Richard Crasta?s gloriously comic and poignant insight into naïve Third World dreamers of the American Dream is a veritable guide to the Indian experience of childhood, puberty, sex, colonialism and yearnings not easily fulfilled, at least not in the original land of the Kama Sutra. Vijay Prabhu is a small-town, middle-class Indian boy negotiating the pains and frustrations that come with growing up in a culture that celebrates the sterility of Jesuit schools and boys? boarding houses and has Pillars of Oppression in place to nip in the bud any adolescent longings. To realize his destiny, both spiritual and sexual, Vijay embarks on a journey that will take him to the purported new land of the Kama Sutra?the land of free sex, greenbacks and Campbell?s Cream of Chicken Soup?the United States of America. Inhaltsangabe: An untypical Indian Catholic boyhood comes to a sudden end as Vijay Prabhu, at 16, inspired by Western success books, Bertrand Russell, and Saul Bellow, jettisons his Catholic religion and decides to become a successful writer and lover of women. This ambitious plan runs into obstacles when, for the next six years, his cherry proves amazingly resistant to repeated assaults, and yields only at Age 22 to a Nepali doctor of love (a PhD in Love).
The result is A Confederacy of Dunces and David Copperfield meeting Catcher in the Rye and Portnoy's Complaint. This comic novel of childhood, coming of age, of modern Indian manhood, and an American Dream was described as "humorous and manic" by The Independent of London, and as "hilarious," "an indictment of colonialism," and "important" by The Hindu. It has also been adapted for the stage and played to many standing room only audiences.
This 125,000-word often laugh-out-loud novel was praised by Kurt Vonnegut as "very funny." It has been published by major publishers in ten different countries and in seven languages.
"Hilarious."--Time Out, London.
"Indefatigable good humor, charm."--Publishers Weekly, USA.
"A comic timing never seen in any Indian novel to date."--The Indian Express
"Should be a recognized classic. An Indian Catcher in the Rye"--Mark Ledbetter, Author and Professor of Linguistics
From the Author: If you are reasonably broad-minded and tolerant and have a sense of humor, this is the one book of mine that I would suggest that you read first. It begins like a literary novel, a bit slow at first; but once you get to around Page 70, you will be glad you persevered. And, despite one reader's comment, not more than ten sentences in its 125,000 words deal with pimples--an essential concern for any teenager. It is a multifaceted novel, and no title or blurb could do justice to it. I wrote it as an act of freedom and independence--which I, as a repressed child, had very little of.
