Two sixteen-year-old boys are classmates at the same exclusive school. Hans is a Jewish middle-class intellectual, Konradin a rich Gentile aristocrat. Between them an intense friendship develops. A year later it is over. For this is Germany, and the year in 1933…

Fred Uhlman, an anti-Nazi lawyer, left Germany in the Thirties, seeking exile first in Europe, then America. Illuminated throughout with his stunning and poetic sense of place, 'Reunion' is one of the classic novels of the Nazi era, a superb insight into Hitler's rise to power and its deep, revocable effect on the ordinary people of Germany. Clever and concise, Uhlman's story is also a beautifully perceptive exploration of the nature of friendship, the pressures which can distort it and the bonds which link one human being to another, capable of outlasting time and distance, disillusion, bitterness and even death.
