Über diesen Titel

This is a comprehensive guide to the resources, in agricultural, mineral and population terms, of the countries of the Third World. This book analyzes the contribution which the possession of resources makes to economic development. It also examines the factors which make for wealth and poverty, and the relationship between the advanced economics of the North and the developing economies of the South. The second part of the book consists of separate analyses of the 144 countries of the Third World. These have been divided into five groups: the three major countries, Brazil, China and India, each considered to have the potential to develop into a major world economy; the 14 "crossover" states - countries which could move from developing to developed states in the near future; the 12 oil states; the 80 low-and middle income countries; and the 35 mini-states.

From Booklist:

Arranged by the World Bank classifications of Third World nations in the annual World Development Report, this work contains individual country surveys covering basic statistical information as well as narrative sections on agriculture, minerals, manufacturing, infrastructure, political considerations, and assessments. Data are derived from eight main sources, ranging from the CIA World Factbook, 1993 to the U.S. Department of Interior's 1992 publication Minerals in the World Economy. In addition, an introductory chapter includes a world overview of population, agriculture, mineral resources, oil, oceans, and climatic changes and other topics.

Although this book provides much useful information, it is not clear whom the compiler intended as his audience. While the introductory chapter provides a good overview of the Third World, most of the other information is readily available in several sources that include all the countries of the world. Europa Year Book, for instance, provides up-to-date narratives on politics and government and easy-to-read charts on minerals and exports and imports, among other items. Statesman's Year-Book provides a narrative interspersed with many useful charts. Both these other books provide vastly more information than this specialized title on the Third World. Furthermore, the arrangement of countries by World Bank categories, such as low-and middle-income economies and oil states, is unhelpful to general readers used to the unified alphabetical listing of the above-named sources. If a future edition of Resources of the Third World is published, the compiler should explicitly state what information in the volume is unique and why it is useful in a reference-book market already glutted with excellent country surveys.

We have been selling academic and scholarly books in Cambridge since 1996. Today we occupy an old warehouse on Coldhams Road, adjacent to the railway tracks leading to Ely, not too far from the airport. The site is called Restwell House. We are an internet bookshop, but visitors are very welcome. Some drop off a few boxes of unwanted books, some pick up a book to save on the postage, some just drop by to get to know us, or want to take advantage of the many bargains on our wooden shelves bookshop, which is distinct from the internet stock offered on the web. Our mission has always been to find new homes for the books we are looking after. If we cannot sell them online, we offer them at very low prices to our visitors. We try to give you a serious and dedicated service which is focussed on the individuality of each single book: its condition, its origin, sometimes even its smell. You come to us for real books, not just instances of ISBNs.
