Beschreibung:

In the current literary language, which is full of modernist, post-modernist, and post-post-modernist cliches, realism and all those associated with it are no longer considered relevant. William Dean Howells (1837-1920), a pioneer in American realism for almost three decades, is virtually obliterated from the present literary scence of America. The prime factor of his disappearance is that the literary trend of realism which he initiated is out of fashion now. The present study brings Howells? revival once again, with emphasis on his representative novels, which have been analysed from two perspectives; firstly, from the contemporary context in which he was bound to write; and secondly, in the current context of post-modernism. It is hoped that the realistic analysis of Howells` works from post-modernist context would bring into light such features of these works which have yet not received much attention. The prime factor of his disappearance is that the literary trend of realism which he initiated is out of fashion now. The present study is an innovative effort and attempts to bring Howells' revival once again, with emphasis on his representative novels, which have been analyzed from two perspectives: firstly, from the contemporary context in which he was bound to write; and secondly, in the current context of post-modernism. It also puts in proper perspective such features of howells' works which had not received much attention earlier."

Buchbeschreibung Peter Lang Jul 1995, 1995. Taschenbuch. Buchzustand: Neu. Neuware - This study focuses on nine American novelists and their criticism of the deceptive enticements of the American Dream. Written during the crucial years between the two World Wars, both, well-known authors such as Hemingway, Fitzgerald and Steinbeck as well as half forgotten Critical Realists, raise an admonitory finger, portraying the needs and illusions, the hopes and shattered dreams of their protagonists. Minute textual analyses reveal the authors' concern with a society which seduces its members with the promises of the American Dream. Striking similarities betwen their criticism and recent European disapprobation of American influence on Europe can be discerned. In order to get a better understanding of the perception of the American Dream, the author illuminates some fundamental concepts concerning the American Way of Life and the country's historical background. 165 pp. Englisch. Artikel-Nr. 9783906753935
