What’s new in the fourth edition?

• Reorganized and updated strategy chapters promote in-depth learning for teachers and teacher candidates.
• Building a Theory Base feature provides a strong research base to support the development of teachers’ knowledge and instructional decisions, particularly for working with English language learners and other students who experience challenges in their literacy development.
• Putting Theory into Practice feature provides more direct focus on using assessment to inform instructional decisions, how to plan effective lessons using each instructional strategy, appropriate ways to differentiate instruction to reach all students, and suggestions for extending children’s learning in meaningful ways.
• Increased emphasis on making connections among instructional strategies to strengthen learning for primary grade students in Part II.
• The focus strategies presented in Part I are applied in Part II to develop differentiated units of instruction using quality fiction and non-fiction texts to meet the needs of all learners.
• The Teacher’s Plan Book provides more specific examples of ways the strategies presented in Part I are applied in actual classrooms.
• Appendix B is reorganized and updated to provide word lists for word study that are appropriate for the broad range of abilities and needs among students in the primary grades.
