Chapter One
The Genius of Nature and its Quorum Cycles
Imagine having the power to change the world and transform your own health. As simple as it sounds, the tips and ideas you'll read about have a lot behind them. Each assertion made about the potential hazards of man-made chemicals, drugs, nutritional and herbal products, and nutritional practices is my opinion, and is based on prestigious, scientific studies and the hard lessons I learned in saving my own life twice. Behind these assertions lies over four decades of painstaking research and a deep base of knowledge and respect for natural laws and living an eco-friendly life that causes no permanent damage to the planet or the human body.
Our inner physician is one of the most energy-hungry systems of the body. It is not hungry for calories or man-made nutrition-It goes much deeper than that. The hunger is for life-sustaining nourishment at the cell level. And, it is nourishment in the right format that helps the inner physician function optimally. That is the dominant theme of this entire e-book.
Today, many are scared. And with good reason-there is too much cancer, too much obesity, too much heart disease, and too many living into old age without quality of life. Because most of us lack knowledge of how to nourish our bodies, food and diet marketers are having a field day with our ignorance. Adding to this confusion, science and medicine contradicts itself every other month.
A recent associated press release stated that 34 people were hospitalized and 110 people were medically treated after a co-worker spayed perfume. Every day we are exposed to the toxic fragrances that people wear on their bodies or use in cleaning their clothes or home. To protect ourselves, we have to restore our body's self-cleaning ecosystem.
Reclaim a Quorum of Nature in your Life
A quorum of all the specialized cells in your body means there is cooperation and efficient function of your cellular anatomy. Most importantly, achieving a quorum gives you nurturing and protection you need from a toxic world.
One of the best ways to understand nature's quorum secrets is to look at the amazing cooperation and teamwork among insects that stay tightly connected to the healing powers of nature. Colonies of the ant Temnothorax albipennis nest in small crevices between rocks, and when the rocks shift and the nest is broken or overcrowded, they use quorum communication in the process of choosing an optimum new nesting site (Proceedings of the Royal Society B-Biological Sciences 273, 2006; Biology Letters 1:2,2005; Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology 50:4: 2001). In a coordinated and highly intelligent fashion the new recruits visit potential nest sites, making assessments of their quality. The number of ants visiting the nest increases until a quorum has been met, and the entire colony has been restored (Behavioral Ecology 16:2, 2005).
It is a quorum status at the nest site that signals carrying of the brood, queen, and fellow workers to the new nest. There is a strong support system and amazing teamwork for the mutual benefit of all the ants in the colony.
Honey bees (Apis mellifera) also use quorum sensing to make decisions about new nest sites by forming swarms that hang from a branch or overhanging. This swarm persists during the quorum decision-making phase until a new nest site is chosen (Apidologie 35:2, 2004; American Scientist 94:3, 2006).
The body's inner physician resides in the brain and neurons. Scientists at the University of Bristol study ant colonies because ants and neurons exist simultaneously as an individual and a collective, quorum working team. With a grant from the UK's Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, Dr. James Marshall and biologist Nigel Franks are noting systemic similarities and physical incongruities of these two systems to illuminate general principles of quorum group decisionmaking, a process that pervades biology and society at all levels of life.
Through this research, Dr. Marshall says he hopes to "elucidate general principles of decision-making by comparing the processes and structures of social insects with those in vertebrate brains, such as in the primate visual cortex." A decision is made when a "quorum" is reached, when a certain number of ants agree on a location, and the same process occurs among neurons in a monkey's visual cortex when the animal performs a visual discrimination task. In the task, a monkey is flashed an image of dots moving in different directions and must decide which way the majority of dots are moving. Amazingly, when the image appears, quorum sensing in the neurons of the monkey's visual cortex gather bits of information from the monkey's eyes, much like ants evaluating a nest site. As more data is gathered, the neurons with the correct answer gradually increase their firing rate and an intelligent decision is made.
Neurons in humans can adjust for either speed or accuracy when a quorum of all body cells is met. The efficiency of a social insect colony or a neuron-based network of nerves is largely a product of the simplicity of its constituents and its inherent connection to nature. Humans have conflicting agendas, whereas social insects in a colony have much less self-interest and genuinely want to converge on the best option for the entire social network.
The similarities between ants and neurons suggest there are general principles of quorum teamwork among cells that can make us far smarter and far more efficient. By looking at our quorum connection to nature, we have to step outside of standard modes of reasoning and health care and find new ways to talk about the powerful synergy between our ecosystems and our cells.
Thus, self organization of our cells against invading microbes or pollutants and inner physician healing is mediated by quorum sensing. It is this amazing that allows the body's inner physician to empower itself to keep us at peak levels of health no matter what is...
