Pall Mall Press, London, 1970. 281p. ills. Cloth. Some foxing on the edges. 'This (.) is a serious and scholarly work. Ruth B. Edwards contributes two short chapters on the stories of Theseus, and W.R. Connor a substantial one on the exploitation of the hero for political purposes from Pisistratus to Pericles; both shed an intereseting light on the mythopoeic development of the legend in its different stages. Dr. Ward herself provides nearly 100 pages on the Bronze Age civilization of the Aegean; she pays special attention to the places which Theseus was connected (.). But what makes this book most worth while is the three chapters in which Simon Tidworth takes the major figures of the cycle (the Minotaur, Ariadne, and Phaedra), and traces the transformations they have undergone in art, literature, and even music from Roman times to the present day.' (J.M. COOK in The Classical Review (New Series), 1972, p.288). Antiquarian. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 16026
