Publishing Years is the story of the 20-year history (1981-2001) of a small woman-owned press, Open Hand Publishing Inc. dedicated to publishing multicultural literature for adults and children at a time when it was virtually impossible for People of Color to find a publisher. Open Hand proudly played a key role in the struggle for racial justice and equality. The world watched as this unknown small press, based in Seattle, Washington and Washington, D.C., gained national and international recognition. Open Hand was established in an era before laptop computers and cell phones. It was a time when people struggled to keep up with ever-changing technology; women demanded an end to career glass ceilings; and white people and People of Color lived -- for the most part -- in separate worlds. The world witnessed the sudden economic collapse of the book industry as chain bookstores erupted throughout the country forcing vital independent bookstores to close their doors forever. Publishing Years reveals the personal quest of the founder of Open Hand Publishing Inc., P. Anna Johnson, a single mother working to keep her family together. At its heart, Publishing Years is both an unsentimental memoir and a love story.
