Inhaltsangabe:

Newly declassified CIA and U.S. Government documents are reproduced here for the first time, exposing a 40-year campaign by Washington to use psychological warfare and propaganda to destabilize Cuba and undermine its revolution.

The Cuban people have been the target for one of the largest psychological warfare campaigns ever waged by one country against another. This book details the U.S. psywar efforts, overt and covert, which have included rumor campaigns, posters, newspapers, books, comics, newsreels, leaflet drops, and radio and TV broadcasts from airplanes, blimps, boats, submarines, secluded islands and the U.S. mainland.

As a comprehensive record of the political, legal and strategic aspects of this four-decade long, multi-million dollar propaganda barrage, the book will serve as a valuable case study and reference for teachers and students of political science, Cold War history, media studies and international communication.

Hundreds of pages of previously secret documents are included in this unique and stunning contribution to the literature on U.S. foreign policy and anti-Castro covert operations.

An excellent overview of the whole sad story of U.S. efforts to use radio broadcasting and now TV against the Castro government efforts which are simply part of a deceitful and utterly counterproductive policy,” Wayne S. Smith, former US diplomat in Havana.

Review:

PSYWAR ON CUBA In Psywar on Cuba, Jon Elliston provides an excellent overview of the whole sad story of U.S. efforts to use radio broadcasting and now TV against the Castro government -- efforts which are simply part of a deceitful and utterly counterproductive policy. Now having been moved to Miami in violation of its original mandate, Radio Marti, as Elliston points out, has become little more than another strident exile radio station, though in this case paid for by the U.S. taxpayer. As for TV Marti, it is never seen nor heard, but year after year the taxpayer is forced to fork over more millions of dollars to keep it operating, the argument now being that to terminate its transmissions would be "a victory for Castro." And in terms of their positive effect in Cuba, the sum total of both operations has been zero. One cannot read Elliston's book without groaning and asking, "How could we be so stupid?" -- Dr. Wayne S. Smith, Former State Department Cuba Expert

PSYWAR ON CUBA Psywar on Cuba is an absolutely fascinating recounting of U.S. government chicanery, incompetence, and malfeasance in its dealings not only with Cuba but also the American people. Author and compiler Jon Elliston weaves together insightful background and interpretation with a wealth of revealing declassified documents to produce the single most important history of this notorious propaganda campaign. Although the book is specifically about Cuba, it is must reading for all those interested in U.S. international communication policy and propaganda in any part of the world. -- Dr. John S. Nichols, Pennsylvania State University College of Communications
