Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

Broadside, folio. Printed in two columns with a central woodcut ornamental divider and woodcut typographic ornaments in the heading. ca. 40 × 31cm. Revolutionary Saint-Domingue broadside by Sonthonax, documenting the reorganization of property and authority in a disrupted colonial port economy. Issued at Saint-Marc on 4 November 1793 (Year II), this broadside ordinance of Léger-Félicité Sonthonax, civil commissioner of the French Republic, belongs to the immediate phase following the reconfiguration of authority in Saint-Domingue during the Revolution. At this moment, French power in the colony was being reconstituted locally under conditions of military conflict, economic disruption, and contested ownership. The text regulates the status of goods recently seized in the port of Saint-Marc. Referring to an earlier ordinance of 31 October ordering the confiscation of property found aboard vessels in the roadstead, it declares the lifting of that seizure with regard to personal effects-coins, silverware, clothing, and belongings-belonging to citizens of Saint-Marc, which are to be returned through a formalized procedure of verification and receipt. By contrast, European merchandise remains under administrative control, to be appraised by designated experts and compensated through drafts on the national treasury. The measure draws a clear distinction between private possessions and commercial goods, and thereby reflects a broader redefinition of property and authority under revolutionary administration. In a context where maritime trade had been disrupted and ownership claims rendered uncertain, the ordinance seeks to stabilize the port economy while reasserting legal control over circulation, valuation, and exchange. Rather than an emergency confiscation or restitution alone, it represents an attempt to formalize a new hierarchy of property under state oversight. Issued for public posting, the document also illustrates the material practices of governance in the colony: printed locally at Saint-Marc by François Lamothe, structured in two columns, and organized through procedural language emphasizing registration, expert assessment, and municipal involvement. The imprint belongs to a little-documented local press, also associated with the periodicals Chronique de Saint-Marc and Courrier royal de Saint-Marc, and otherwise chiefly known through ephemeral publications; all recorded imprints appear to date from 1793-1794, and very few examples survive. Sonthonax was a French lawyer and revolutionary official appointed in 1792 as one of the civil commissioners sent to Saint-Domingue to enforce the authority of the French Republic and implement policies of equality for free people of color. Confronted with widespread insurrection, foreign intervention, and the collapse of colonial administration, he became a central figure in the transformation of the colony. In August 1793 he proclaimed the abolition of slavery in the northern province, a measure later extended and ratified by the French Convention in 1794. His administration combined political, military, and economic interventions aimed at maintaining French control while adapting to rapidly changing conditions on the ground. . Mounted on canvas. Old horizontal and vertical folds; paper toned, with creasing and scattered small marginal tears and losses, chiefly at the edges; a few small holes (likely from former posting), not affecting the text. Overall stable and well preserved for a document of this type. Broadside, folio. Printed in two columns with a central woodcut ornamental divider and woodcut typographic ornaments in the heading.…
