Privateer follows the Hammond, Briggs, and Gant families, privateering opportunists whose hunting grounds were the world's oceans. In the thick of the War of 1812, privateersmen thieve and prospect to make boundless fortunes, or die trying. The high risk of armed combat on the open sea in Privateer attracts adventurers, riffraff, and the worst of idle sailors in port: smugglers, drunks, slavers, and women like Mary Celeste Hammond and her paramours, Ben Briggs and Quartus Gant, each with the stomach to inflict violence and seduce society, singularly to win immeasurable spoils. Power proves malleable, conflict as common as salt and water when respectable families, heartless financiers, rough-hewn men with calloused hands, and young lads with hungry stomachs all struggle to survive in Privateer. Which of these chancers will survive the violence, make their fortune, yet keep their souls intact?
