Chapter One

Who Was the Serpent in the Garden of Eden?

The Serpent

Many doctrines have depicted a snake in a tree tempting Eve. Pictures have been painted showing a snake coiled around a tree. Is this the true image of what really happened or is there a different perspective on it? Let us go into what the Bible account says in Genesis 3:1-5.

1. Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the Lord God has made. And he said unto the woman, "Yea, hath God said, ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?"

2. And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

3. But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

4. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

5. For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. (KJV)

What we see in these passages is that the Serpent talked to Eve. Now I do not know of any serpents that talk to this day. In fact the only animal in the Bible that talked was Baalam's Ass. So this must have been a special kind of serpent. According to Strongs' Exhaustive Concordance, we see that the word serpent means the following.

5175 nachash (naw-khawsh'); from 5172; a snake (from its hiss):

To get a clearer picture of the meaning of this word and to note that it has a hiss, we will now go to the root word of the meaning 5172.

5172 nachash (naw-khash');

A primitive root; properly, to hiss, i.e., whisper a (magic) spell; generally, to prognosticate:

When we go to the word whisper, we find the American Heritage Dictionary has the following meanings:

A secretly or surreptitiously expressed belief, rumor, or hint: whispers of scandal To say or tell privately or secretly To speak quietly and privately, as by way of gossip, slander, or intrigue.'

The word whisper will be of interest to the readers, when we get into chapter 5, The High Cabal and the New World Order.

Prognosticate has a relative meaning, when we look into the American Heritage Dictionary and see what the meaning of this word is.

Prog-nos-ti-cate

1. To predict according to present indications or signs; foretell. See Synonyms at PREDICT.

2. To foreshadow; portend: urban architectural that prognosticates a social and cultural renaissance.

[Middle English pronosticaten, from Medieval Latin prognosticare, prognosticat-, from Latin prognosticum, sign of the future, from Greek prognostikon, from neuter of prognostikos. Foreknowing. See Prognostic].

Prognosticate then means to predict events. This is what the Serpent did when he told Eve, that "you can be as gods." Now in verse 1 we also read that the Serpent was more subtle than any beasts. The word subtle, in Hebrew, has the following meaning:

6175 'aruwm (aw-room');

passive participle of 6191; cunning (usually in a bad sense):

Breaking this word down, we get a clearer idea of what is said:

6191 'aram (aw-ram');

a primitive root; properly, to be (or make) bare; but used only in the derivative sense (through the idea perhaps of smoothness) to be cunning (usually in a bad sense):

Looking at these meanings, we see the Serpent's true character. He is cunning in a bad sense, he is smooth. Does this remind you of someone all Christians should know about? He is also referred to as a beast in this first verse. Looking into the Hebrew meaning of beast, we find a different meaning than this word implies.

2416 chay (khah'-ee);

from 2421; alive; hence, raw (flesh); fresh (plant, water, year), strong; also (as noun, especially in the feminine singular and masculine plural) life (or living thing), whether literally or figuratively:

After a closer look at the word beast, we see that it does not necessarily mean an animal but has the meaning of something alive, or a living thing. The word chay is also used in Genesis 2:7 for the word living.

7. And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. (KJV)

There is a word for the literal meaning of beast found in Jeremiah.

Jer 12:4

4. How long shall the land mourn, and the herbs of every field wither, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein? the beasts are consumed, and the birds; because they said, He shall not see our last end.(KJV)

According to Strong's Concordance, that word beast means the following:

929 behemah (be-hay-maw');

from an unused root (probably meaning to be mute); properly, a dumb beast; especially any large quadruped or animal (often collective):

With these meanings understood, it should become clear that this was not a snake, as we know it. Somehow it has been added into Christian teaching, that Satan got into a snake and spake to Eve, even though there is no Scripture that supports this theory. The word Serpent, is linked to Satan himself throughout Scripture. In other words the Serpent is the Devil. Written proof is found in Revelation.

Rev. 12:7-9.

7. And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,

8. And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.

9. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. (KJV)
