The message of this book, originally delivered as the 1995 Lyman Beecher Lectures, is that there is more to preaching than the people in the pews probably think.
Drawing upon sources as diverse as Albert Camus and Woody Allen, Adams explores the sublime irony of preaching: that the very things that make it a burden also make it a joy. In this context, he sets forth what should be the real purpose of preaching: not merely to tell what the Bible says, but to tell it in the context of a particular place and time.
From veterans of the pulpit to first-year seminarians, those who are called to the burdens and the joys of the preacher's art will find much to think about in these pages.
