Managing food security in a predominantly Rural Economy such as India, requires an understanding not only of how Agricultural Policies of food Supply and incomes but also how households acquire food and cope with insecurity of food. Many economists regard Income as the main indicator of welfare, but other planners maintain that food consumption, health and Nutrition of Household members are also important in defining a household`s standard of living. The main concerned of this Study is to trace the pathways from economic and social policies to food security and ultimately to nutrition. Over the year of famine and drought households have developed some mechanisms to cope with scarcity. Households take the decisions out of past experience in coping with food insecurity. There are a few mechanisms that are applicable to most households in a given area. Therefore an understanding of the coping mechanisms adopted for food security at household level in drought prone areas is essential to find out Solutions for future. This work represents comprehensive analysis of the data on 300 households collected in the drought prone areas of Ananthpur district, Andhra Pradesh. Two rounds of survey was conducted in the present study to understand the difference in mechanisms operating between "peak" and "lean" seasons. Given the recent interest in the need for understanding the impact of climate changes on food security and overall development, this study will address the various coping mechanisms adopted at household level, to reduce food insecurity in drought prone environments. The study will be of particular interest to Natural and social scientists, policy makers and Ngo staff. These unique data set enables researchers examine the temporal dimensions of food security, income, consumption, nutritional status and many other issues that cannot be adequately addressed.
