Set against the backdrop of 2020’s Orlando, Chip Byers' And, the Plow Shan’t Work the Soil is a contemporary reimagining of the Biblical tale of Cain and Abel, intertwining the story with the struggles faced by the Autistic community. A deeply personal and introspective exploration of life as an Autistic individual, the novel blends philosophical reflections on societal expectations, the tension between personal identity and external perceptions, and the struggle for autonomy and acceptance. The analytical yet emotionally raw narrative critiques the norms of science, therapy, and social integration while providing a nuanced, vulnerable, and intellectual window into the mind of someone on the Autism spectrum. Through poetic language and reflective insights, the work touches on themes of identity, belonging, and the impact of external expectations, weaving these elements into a story that is both profoundly individual and universally relatable.
