From Library Journal:

For Fitzgerald, the place to withdraw from alcohol wasn't Hazelden but the less famous St. Mary's Rehabilitation Center in Minneapolis. Chairman of Book-of-the-Month Club until he retired in 1984, he infuses this well-written day-to-day re-creation of life at St. Mary's with literary gossip: Cheever, Hemingway, a biography of Nora Joyce read at bedtime. The staff members are real, but companion-patients are fictional and seem too carefully balanced; readers meet the minister, the priest, the coke user, the battered housewife. These character studies are excellent, but little is revealed about the healing process, and there are gaps in Fitzgerald's own story. Yet ultimately this is an interesting book that, hindered by a misleading title, might fall between the cracks. Neither self-help nor fiction, it is one writer's personal tale and should appeal to dedicated readers of literary biographies.
