Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

The twelfth edition of this sought-after account of Pitcairn and island life, a lovely copy in the original publisher's cloth binding. The twelfth edition, dated from the same copies on Jisc, with a new preface bringing the text up to date, with four leaves of advertisements to the rear. An exciting account of the island of Pitcairn, with details on island life and descriptions of the scenery. With chapters on the bounty, the murder of John Norton, accounts of the mutiny, and much more. including a historical sketch of Norfolk Island and its condition in the nineteenth century. The first edition appeared in 1853.Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, seventeen full page plates, of which one folding facsimile of John Adam's handwriting, and illustrations in text. Collated, complete. An excellent copy of this sought after travel work. From the library at Julian Park, Hertfordshire, belonging to Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie. Audrey was the youngest daughter of an Anglo-American lumber and steel millionaire, sister to Edward James, a key figure in the Surrealist movement, and the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII. She was an English socialite known for her beauty and for charming various wealthy men, she was included in The Book of Beauty by Cecil Beaton. A patron of the arts, she assisted Viscount Carlow financially in the publication of limited editions of numerous works by leading literary figures such as T E Lawrence, James Joyce, Wyndham Lewis, and others. A hedonistic pursuer, she was recognised as one of the 'Bright Young Things'. In the original publisher's full cloth binding with gilt embossed decorations to the spine and front board. Externally lovely with minor shelf wear only and and minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Internally, firmly bound. With a minor puncture mark to the front joint, not affecting the binding. With a minor faint spotting to the fore edge, affecting only the occasional leaves, particularly the first and last few, otherwise the pares are generally very clean and bright throughout. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, seventeen full page plates, of which one folding facsimile of John Adam's handwriting, and illustrations in text. Collated, complete. Very Good Indeed.…
