Oral histories told from unique perspective of tuberculosis patients at Fort Bayard in southwest New Mexico 1900-1949, as told to Dr. Twana Sparks. The history of tuberculosis diagnosis and treatment in first half of the 20th century is reviewed. Pamphlet from 1908 and Journal of the American Medical Association 1902 tell patients and family members what to expect at the Army Sanatorium. The unusual treatments such as donkey milk consumption and ping pong ball implants make for interesting and entertaining reading. German POWs were housed in New Mexico forts at the time, and their experience is reviewed.
Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor: Dr. Twana Sparks is a surgeon, writer, humorist and musician. She grew up in southwest New Mexico and was trained as a nurses aide, laboratory and x-ray technician, autopsy assistant and death scene investigator before deciding to become a physician. Medical school and residency in Otolaryngology (Ear Nose and Throat) were completed at University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. She published her medical school journal Diary of A Hippocrate in 1996. It was used as a text book in womens studies at UCLA. She walked from coast to coast from Portland Oregon to Portland Maine in 1993 as a cure for burn out after 11 years of medical school and residency training.
