Pica Roman Type in Elizabethan England.
Cloth, folio, 31 cm, 33, pp, plus 171 plates. From the blurb: "Scholars have been too quick to abandon their efforts to identify the types used by Elizabethan printers. Differences among letter forms do exist, and do sort themselves out into recognizable patterns by which families of types can be identified and, within the families, individual founts and their owners singled out. The most widely used type face was roman, which during the second half of the sixteenth century replaced blackletter as the standard face in English books. The most widely used size of type was pica. The book starts in the early 1550s, when punchcutters first came to England. It ends at 1610, for soon after that date the shops were flooded with new Dutch faces which give an entirely different appearance to later seventeenth-century printing. Professor Ferguson illustrates his arguments with facsimiles, tables and line drawings of Elizabethan letter-forms, to show the reader how the types of this once common size and face are differentiated. Such information is of invaluable use in pursuing a number of problems facing the student of Elizabethan texts."
