Artikelbeschreibung vom Verkäufer

Oblong folio measuring 15" x 11". String-tied brown leatherette over stiff paper boards with gilt titles. Contains 105 sepia-toned or black and white silver gelatin photographs measuring between 2" x 3" and 8" x 10" with captions. Very good album with small tears and loose pages with near fine photographs. A scrapbook filled with photographs, ephemera, and newspaper clippings following a group of participants in the second wave of the largely-forgotten walkathon and speed derby craze that had its heyday in the 1930s. It appears it was compiled by a speed derby athlete featured throughout named "Glenn." This album is centered around the post-World War II resurgence of the scene in St. Louis, Missouri in the mid-1940s. Some of the photographs in this album chronicle the evolution of walkathons into the even more intense speed derby. Pasted in the album are ads for speed derbies at Down’s Park and Westlake in St. Louis, Missouri. A newspaper article in the album describes the new phenomenon "as mayhem set to music," proudly advertised as "the world’s roughest sport." Many of the photographs are group photos and portraits of the participants; several bear handwritten names on the verso. There are also a number of images of contestants sitting on large ice blocks, presumably another endurance test meant to weed out contestants. Several of the larger photographs are action shots, showing participants in the Speed Derby, who are seen wearing protective helmets in a few of the images. Another article in the album paints an even more vivid picture, telling the story of "Pigtails" Betty White at the Walkathon in Long Beach, California, where competitors were given food and lodgings, plus $15 per week and the chance of winning $25 in nightly prizes. "Additional money was earned when the audience, mostly housewives and teenagers, witnessed some unethical act like contestants kicking one another or ripped off clothes. These sideshows brought a rain of coins for the winner. At the end of 11 weeks, ‘Pigtails’ Betty White, handcuffed to her brother, staggered in the winner." Public weddings were also a frequent attraction at these events. Couples who selected these venues were given gifts, groceries, and cash prizes. This album includes a program for a wedding at a speed derby and several wedding photographs. A unique album capturing various aspects of this American phenomenon.
