Quarto. Black leatherette three ring binder with blank gray album pages. Contains 148 sepia-toned gelatin silver photographs neatly mounted and captioned beneath each image, identifying people, places, and some buildings, as well as providing dates and descrptions. The album appears complete with all images. Most of the images are 5" x 4", with a few larger. Binder with slight wear, near fine; images are largely fine. Most of the images appear to be from Dent and Ozark Counties, in Southern Missouri. The album seems almost entirely devoted to several camping trips taken between 1930-1933, largely devoted to fishing, and bird and small game shooting, target shooting with old long rifles, and with images of tents, towed camping trailers, campsites, etc. with much attention paid to the catches of the men and women on the various trips. In the course of the trips, images are provided of various older cotton mills, houses, and locations, as well as elderly local residents, including interior shots of their homes. Whoever took the photographs was at worst a talented amateur, and some of the images are truly excellent. Indeed one image, of an old woman doing needlework by an old stove, bears a handwritten note "Sold - Liberty Magazine". The sportsfolk, both male and female, are exhibited extensively outdoors in sporting activities, but perhaps as interesting are the images of the older residents they encounter, all captioned, including: "Mrs. Will Nelson of Dent Co., Mo. near Pigeon Creek with her hand cards and spinning wheel." and "Aunt Nancy Raser of Dent Co., Mo. at her spinning wheel in use over 100 years and her sister Aunt Mary Leonard churning." Among many locations identified (many of them likely now defunct or greatly altered) include House Springs, Montauk, Bloomsdale, St. Claire, Linn Creek, Roaring River, Ste. Genevieve, Centerville, and many others, all in Missouri. A very cohesive and geographically homogenous album with a generous selection of captioned images, centered around outdoor sports, but including many images of obscure Missouri locations, and a glimpse of their rustic inhabitants. We've seen many pleasing camping, hunting, and fishing albums, and while they retain their charms; this one is superior, and of particular interest to those interested in Missouri.
