This book examines Philippine history from its early settlement to its emergence as a major topic of American interest at the turn of the 20th century. The author, an American journalist stationed in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War, brings an eyewitness perspective to the complex events of the period. The book provides an in-depth look at the emergence of Filipino nationalism, the role of the Catholic Church in Philippine society, and the motivations behind American intervention in the region. The author argues that the roots of the Philippine-American conflict can be traced back to the Spanish era, and that the United States' failure to understand Filipino aspirations led to a tragic and unnecessary war. This book offers valuable insights into the historical forces that shaped the Philippines, and sheds light on the challenges facing the country today.
