Our journey begins with Himilco, an ancient Phoenician navigator who ventured into uncharted waters long before the era of Christopher Columbus. Himilco was a daring explorer from the city of Carthage, situated in modern-day Tunisia. His exploits took him to the western Mediterranean, and he is believed to have journeyed as far as the British Isles, perhaps even the coasts of present-day France and Spain. Himilco's travels predate Columbus by nearly two millennia, revealing the seafaring prowess of the ancient world. Despite Himilco's accomplishments, his name has faded into obscurity, overshadowed by more recent explorers. However, his voyages paved the way for future navigators, proving that the unknown could be conquered by those with the audacity to set sail into uncharted territories. While Christopher Columbus is celebrated for his voyages across the Atlantic, the West African King Abubakari II embarked on a fascinating but lesser-known journey in the 14th century. Abubakari II, the ruler of the Mali Empire, sought to explore uncharted waters, leading an expedition that reached the shores of the Americas. Though evidence is still debated, some historians believe his fleet may have reached South America, centuries before Columbus set foot on the continent. Abubakari II's remarkable ambition highlights the African contribution to global exploration, which is often overshadowed by European accounts. His story is a testament to the rich history of African maritime adventures, opening a window into a world where Africans were pioneering voyagers in the age of discovery. Our journey takes a different turn as we delve into the life of Sonni Ali, a warrior king of the Songhai Empire in West Africa during the 15th century. Sonni Ali rose to power through military conquest and proved a formidable empire that rivaled the great empires of the time. His reign was marked by territorial expansion and the introduction of administrative innovations that shaped the course of West African history. Sonni Ali's story shows the complex interplay between empire-building, power, and diplomacy in the heart of Africa. His military acumen and leadership skills left a lasting legacy on the African continent, as the Songhai Empire became one of the largest and most influential states in the region. Our voyage then takes us across the Atlantic to the age of European exploration, where Pedro Nino, a Spanish navigator, played a significant role. Nino was among the intrepid explorer
