Born in Kuwait in 1926, into a distinguished Kuwaiti family of pearl merchants and seafarers, Saif Marzooq al- Shamlan describes the final generation of the pearling industry from 1900 to the slump of the 1930s, when the development of the Japanese cultured pearl led to economic disaster for the people of the Gulf.
Críticas
A picturesque, poetic, and thoughtful memoir, aptly translated into English by Peter Clark provides the reader with a crystal-clear vision of the pearling industry from 1900 to the 1930s. Highly recommended reading an accomplished contribution to Kuwait and Gulf historical studies, and a must for any non-specialist general reader with an interest in the evolution of the pearling industry. --James A. Cox"The Midwest Book Review" (01/01/0001)
Al-Shamlan provides descriptions of pearling based on his family s accounts and records of their long experience in the industry, his own shipboard observations during his teens, and oral accounts obtained from diverse groups of owners and workers, including occasional bedouin pearl fishers. There are discussions of the role of the pearl in the Qur an and in Arabic literature, Kuwait s maritime history, the growth of pearling, and the work characteristics and living situations of merchants, shipmasters, and divers. Although mostly set before the decline in diving and the pearl trade during the 1930s and the end of the industry in the 1950s, this account also includes an examination of pearling in Oman and India. --B. This book is a personal journey a fascinating discussion. Al-Shamlan reveals the depth of his uncompromising commitment to Kuwaiti pearling as a noble tradition, and it is this that drives the book. --Steve Mullins"International Journal of Maritime History, Vol. 14 No. 1" (01/01/0001)
The felicitous combination of the author s breezy, rather gossipy style and the fidelity of a translation that allows the pattern of the underlying Arabic to show through, makes this an eminently readable book that will appeal not only to those with special interests, but also to the reader seeking no more than a rattling good yarn. --James Taylor"Asian Affairs" (01/01/0001)
