Assesses, through empirical research methods, the applicability and possible modifications of peacekeeping principles, procedures, and mediation techniques in civil wars. Focusing centrally on the conflict in the former Yugoslavia, but including assessments of UN peacekeeping in Somalia, Cambodia, and the Middle East, the contributors examine experiences in the field along with military and diplomatic perspectives. Data stems from interviews with top-level civilian and military practitioners; two international workshops about lessons learned by UN Protection Force commanders; and a questionnaire completed by several hundred UN Protection Force officers.
