Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

First Latin edition, first translated edition. Lugduni Batavorum: Excudebat typis Plantinianis Franciscus Raphelengius, pro Luca Iansenio Aurigario; 1586. Two parts in one. Folio in 6s and 2s (15 13/16" x 11 3/8", 401mm x 290mm). [Full collation available.] With an engraved title-border (with letterpress); two engraved plates, of which one (B3) has a volvelle and a diametric pointer; and 45 engraved double-page charts. Remboîté (recased) in later dark speckled calf. On the spine, five raised bands with a double dashed gilt roll. Panels gilt with gilt centerpieces. Title gilt to black morocco in the second panel. Remboîtage. Some scuffs to the extremities. Some closed splits and cracks to the spine. Lacking ?2 (dedication to Queen Elizabeth, to the reader). C2 remargined at the upper spine-corner, with one letter restored in facsimile. Washed. With the black morocco gilt book label of Marvyn Carton (from his sale, Christie's New York, 5 December 2006, lot 221; ex H.P. Kraus catalogue 116, no. 278) on the lower edge of the front paste-down. Ink signature and date at the lower edge of the title-page. Lucas Janszoon Waghenaer (1533-1606), one of the brightest lights of Dutch Golden-Age mapmaking, distinguished himself from many of his fellow stars by some 14 years of seafaring, rather than simply compiling the exploration and observation of others. The Spieghel der Zeevaerdt (although in the present issue the title-page reads Spiegel; the Seafarer's Mirror or, as it was originally Englished, the Mariner's Mirrour) is properly a rutter (seafarer's handbook) with charts, and it is the first. It distinguished by its usefulness , integrating for the first time charts, ships' logs and rutters (handbooks of voyages). As a result, the popularity of the work was extraordinary. It was translated into Latin (first) as well as German, French and English. Indeed, despite the longstanding antipathy between the Low Countries and England, sea-atlases were long called "wagoners" after Waghenaer, the kleenex of maritime cartography. This Latin edition (Wag 5A) publishes for the first time chart 42 (part 2, quire XIX, part of the Danish coast). Koeman calls the plates, engraved by Baptist and Johannes van Deutecom, "the most beautiful maps of the period." Marvyn Carton (1917-2004) was an investment banker and trustee of Brown University. He endowed the Kapstein chair in literary arts at Brown. His substantial collection of maps and atlases was sold by Christie's New York in 2006. I cannot decipher the manuscript of the title-page.
