Illustrated by Charles Copeland. Step into the captivating world of medieval castles, noble knights, heroic deeds, and ancient codes of honor in this classic introduction to the age of chivalry.
In Page, Esquire, and Knight: A Book of Chivalry, author Marion Florence Lansing brings the romance and adventure of medieval knighthood vividly to life. Through engaging storytelling and rich historical detail, this classic explores the training, duties, ideals, and adventures of the medieval knight from childhood to full knighthood.
Readers follow the journey of a young noble boy as he advances through the traditional stages of medieval life: first as a page learning manners and service within the castle hall, then as an esquire training in arms and horsemanship, and finally as a knight sworn to uphold the chivalric ideals of courage, loyalty, courtesy, and honor. Along the way, the book opens a fascinating window into the customs, tournaments, battles, feasts, and ceremonies of medieval Europe.
Drawing upon historical traditions and legendary tales, Lansing recreates the atmosphere of the Middle Ages with warmth and imagination. Castles, armored warriors, noble ladies, heraldry, jousts, and acts of bravery fill the pages, while also offering insight into the moral and social ideals associated with chivalry and knighthood.
Written in a lively and accessible style, Page, Esquire, and Knight combines education with adventure, making medieval history both understandable and engaging for modern readers. Blending historical fact with the traditions and ideals of chivalry, it offers an enduring introduction to the medieval world and its lasting influence on literature and popular culture.
This carefully restored edition presents this historical classic for today’s readers. Ideal for students, homeschool libraries, lovers of medieval history, and readers fascinated by knights and castles, it remains a timeless introduction to the world of chivalry and the Middle Ages.
