PTG is defined as a phenomenon where a person becomes stronger and creates a more meaningful life in the wake of tragedy or trauma. David suffered from PTSD after his involvement as the first due engineer on a multiple line of duty death incident in Charleston, South Carolina where nine firefighters perished. He delved into a life of alcohol and prescription drug abuse, mixed martial arts fighting to quell his anger, erratic behavior, sleeve tattoos, depression, survivors guilt, and anxiety. Dr. David Griffin is a Battalion Chief and Deputy Director of Training in Charleston, South Carolina. He is also the owner of On A Mission LLC which offers motivational speaking, organizational development services, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) courses, and posttraumatic growth (PTG) seminars for public, private, and non-profit organizations. He was the engineer on the first due apparatus on June 18, 2007 where nine of his fellow firefighters perished in the line of duty. He has a Bachelor of Science in education from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, a Master of Science in executive fire service leadership, and a Doctorate of Education in organizational leadership and development. Griffin is a best-selling author and featured speaker at universities, conferences, and organizations across the globe regarding his research and firsthand experience with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), posttraumatic growth (PTG), organizational learning, leadership, development, and change. He has been an athlete throughout his life, playing professional baseball, competing as an amateur bodybuilder, fighting at the professional level in mixed martial arts, competing in Ironman Triathlons, and training in the CrossFit methodology.
