EXTREMELY SCARCE / EXTRÊMEMENT RARE. Patrick Argüello (1943-1970) was born in San Francisco to a Nicaraguan father and an American mother. He lived in Managua from the age of 3 until 1956. That year, after the repression that followed the assassination of President Anastasio Somoza Garcia, his stepfather and mother fled to Los Angeles, where he studied at the University of California. In 1967, thanks to a scholarship, he left to study in Chile, then went to Nicaragua, where he tried to collaborate with the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), but one of its leaders, Carlos Fonseca, was suspicious of his American origins and sidelined him. In August 1969, the government of President Anastasio Somoza Debayle exiled him to Switzerland. The FSLN was then looking for new recruits for its guerrilla activities and, through the Trotskyist Fourth International, he came into contact with the Palestinian PFLP, which took him to Jordan for training in April 1970. He then joined Leïla Khaled in Paris, who the previous year had been the first woman to take part in a plane hijacking. With her, on 6 September, he tried to take control of an El Al Amsterdam-New York flight, but was killed by a security guard, while Leïla Khaled was handed over to the British police at London Heathrow airport. / Patrick Argüello (1943-1970) est né à San Francisco d'un père nicaraguayen et d'une mère américaine. Il vécut à Managua de l'âge de 3 ans jusqu'en 1956. Cette année-là, après la répression qui suivit l'assassinat du Président Anastasio Somoza Garcia, son beau-père et sa mère se réfugièrent à Los Angeles, où il étudia à l'Université de Californie. En 1967, grâce à une bourse, il alla étudier au Chili, puis se rendit au Nicaragua, où il tenta de collaborer avec le Front Sandiniste de Libération Nationale (FSLN), mais l'un de ses dirigeants, Carlos Fonseca, se méfia de ses origines américaines et le mit sur la touche. En août 1969, le gouvernement du président Anastasio Somoza Debayle l'exile en Suisse. Le FSLN cherche alors de nouvelles recrues pour ses activités de guérilla et, par l'intermédiaire de la Quatrième Internationale trotskiste, il entre en contact avec le FPLP palestinien, qui l'emmène en Jordanie en avril 1970 puis suivre un entraînement militaire. Il rejoint ensuite à Paris Leïla Khaled qui, l'année précédente, avait été la première femme à participer à un détournement d'avion. Avec elle, le 6 septembre, il tente de prendre le contrôle d'un vol El Al Amsterdam-New York, mais est tué par un agent de sécurité, tandis que Leïla Khaled est remise à la police britannique à l'aéroport de Londres Heathrow / Palestine.
