Über diesen Titel:

Inhaltsangabe: This book is a history of the diseases of humankind from the earliest times to the present. It draws on the author's own work on the history of infection, as well as on evidence drawn from archaeology, history and demography. Professor McKeown argues that the causes of many diseases are social, the consequences of the requirements of the culture and society placing unaccounted for strains upon the biological organism. The agricultural and industrial developments of the last three centuries have brought greater control of the environment, an increase in food and protection from hazards, particularly from infective organisms. However, industrial and economic developments have also brought new threats to health, from profound changes in conditions of life for which human genes are not adapted. The author argues that the non-communicable diseases now common in developing countries are not to be regarded as a hard core of genetically determined conditions and that many apparently intractable conditions in the west are of fundamentally social and cultural origins. Furthermore, Professor McKeown considers that many of these are potentially preventable. How they may be prevented is the concluding theme of this work. Historians of disease and medicine, social historians; demographers, geographers, physical anthropologists; medical historians, sociologists, medical practitioners.

Klappentext: This book is a history of the diseases of humankind and their causes from earliest times to the present day. It is a tour de force drawing upon the author?s extensive work on the history of infection, as well upon evidence drawn from archaeology, history and demography.

Both infectious and almost all non?communicable diseases are potentially eradicable. Just how they are and the significance of Professor McKeown?s finding for health policies in developing countries, are the concluding themes of this controversial work.

Anbieterinformationen: We have been selling academic and scholarly books in Cambridge since 1996. Today we occupy an old warehouse on Coldhams Road, adjacent to the railway tracks leading to Ely, not too far from the airport. The site is called Restwell House. We are an internet bookshop, but visitors are very welcome. Some drop off a few boxes of unwanted books, some pick up a book to save on the postage, some just drop by to get to know us, or want to take advantage of the many bargains on our wooden shelves bookshop, which is distinct from the internet stock offered on the web. Our mission has always been to find new homes for the books we are looking after. If we cannot sell them online, we offer them at very low prices to our visitors. We try to give you a serious and dedicated service which is focussed on the individuality of each single book: its condition, its origin, sometimes even its smell. You come to us for real books, not just instances of ISBNs.
