When the pioneers of the 19th century rolled westward in their covered wagons, the end of the trail was the Promised Land. And the Promised Land was Oregon. In the pages of Oregon on My Mind you will discover why. Say "Oregon" and great natural beauty springs to mind. And indeed it has that. The Pacific Ocean beats relentlessly on Oregon's western shore, carving its coastline into spectacular headlands and cliffs. Deep in fog-shrouded mountains are groves of ancient forests, whose trees were already tall when Columbus first set foot on the continent. Along the crest of the Cascade Mountains, Oregon's recreation mecca, tower glacier-covered peaks that were once fiery volcanoes. And In the far, remote reaches of the high desert is an ocean of sagebrush and lonely buttes beneath a great expanse of star-studded sky. But there is much more. Portland, the "City of Roses," with its Cascade Mountains backdrop, is a bustling center of commerce and among the country's most livable cities. The Willamette Valley's green, rolling farmland is Oregon's breadbasket. And the mighty Columbia River, that Lewis and Clark rode to the Pacific Ocean, Boasts dams that transform raw power into electricity that lights the Northwest. You will see it all in Oregon on My Mind. You'll experience the quiet majesty of the deep forest, glimpse elk in a dawn meadow, marvel at an ocean sunset, feel the bite of winter's chill in the high country and stand in awe of the desert's vast majesty. And you'll meet the people, some the sons and daughters of pioneers, others recent refugees from more crowded places. Ride with cowboys on the open range and cast a fly on a mirror-still lake in quest of trout. Loggers, ranchers, farmers, skiers, mountain climbers-they are the human mosaic that makes Oregon the unique and wonderful place that it is. Oregon is diversity. Of landscape and people.
