In Divine Order
In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:6

Whenever things work out for the best, my husband says, "It's in divine order." He means that things are working out just as God has planned. God is ordering our steps.
Yet, in order for God to order our steps and make our paths straight, we must acknowledge him. We must seek his direction and give him the praise.
I know someone whose life, according to her orderly birth date, should be in divine order. She was born on January 23, 1945, or 12345. How much more orderly can that be? It is perfect mathematical order. I majored in mathematics in college because I believed that mathematics is most like God. It is perfect, orderly, and can be proven. It is objective. One hundred is perfection; it is no one's subjective opinion.
I want my life to be like that—in divine order. In order for that to happen, God must order my steps; and in order for God to order my steps and make my paths straight, I must acknowledge him. I need to know him. I need to honor him. I need to praise him. I need to worship him. I need to seek his direction in all I say and do.
How about you? Do you want God to order your steps? Do you want him to direct your paths? Are you willing to acknowledge him in all your ways? That's a tall order, but with God's help, it is possible.
Order my steps, dear Lord.
Lord, I need your divine order in my life. Help me to follow your directions every day. Amen.

CHAPTER 2Seeing the Speck
Why do you see the speck in your neighbor's eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye? Matthew 7:3

Can you believe it? Every morning we wake up with a fresh slate full of God's great love and mercies. What a blessing! How will you be renewed and inspired by that great love and compassion today? What will keep your steps ordered by God? Will knowing how much God loves you encourage you to love and show compassion to someone today? Will you think twice about withholding your judgment from a friend or family member? Do you notice the faults of others while you ignore your own?
I met an unwed mother who said as soon as people found out she had children and had never been married, they looked down on her. They wondered how she could have possibly made the same mistake more than once. They ignored the fact she was a loving mother who made many sacrifices for her children and was providing a loving home. They never considered the possibility that she had learned from her past indiscretions. They did not realize she did not regret having given birth to wonderful children or that she loved them unconditionally. They were not present when the children hugged her and told her how much they loved her. They did not know her children provided her with love and compassion every morning. Isn't it amazing that children are like that? Even if you have to punish them one day, by the next day they are ready to love you all over again. They do not judge you; they don't even notice your shortcomings.
Just today do you think you can extend unconditional love and mercy to those with whom you come in contact? Will you overlook their faults knowing that you have some of your own? Will you follow God's direction?
Order my steps, dear Lord.
Father, thank you for the love and mercy you extend to us in spite of our shortcomings. We don't deserve your grace, but you never tire of extending it to us. Help us to go and do likewise. Amen.

CHAPTER 3A Teachable Spirit
Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart to revere your name. Psalm 86:11

What is it that you really want to learn? Do you want to learn to speak French? Do you want to learn to play an instrument? Do you want to learn more about the Bible and the way God wants to order your steps? What is it that you are committed to learning? Committed is the key word. You may want to learn something, but you have not made a commitment. Wanting to learn and committing to learn are two different things.
Before we can make a commitment to learn we must have a teachable spirit. A teachable spirit is an open spirit; it is a willingness to open one's heart and mind and absorb what is presented. Some of us express a willingness to be taught, but we do not have a teachable spirit. We feel that we already know everything. There is no teacher knowledgeable enough to teach us, and there is no information worth learning.
I know that some church members refuse to attend Sunday school or Bible study classes because they feel that they have been church members longer than anyone that might be teaching. They fail to recognize the difference between membership and discipleship. Members join the church; disciples study and prepare to be apostles—those sent to bring others to salvation.
Do you have a teachable spirit? Do you want to be a disciple or are you satisfied with being a member?
Order my steps, dear Lord.
Lord, teach me your way that I may lead others to you. Amen.

CHAPTER 4Acceptable Words
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. Psalm 19:14

What kind of words are acceptable to God? Well, I am sure that they would be kind words. They certainly would not be curse words. They would not be hurtful words, and they would not be discouraging words. Jesus gave us examples of acceptable words in the Sermon on the Mount. He used that teachable moment to tell us what God expects.
Our words ought to be God-controlled. We do not need to speak harsh words to which we have given no thought. Our words ought to be empathetic. We need to feel what the person to whom we are speaking is feeling. We need to speak sincere and honest words that reflect our being pure in heart. We ought to speak words of peace and joy.
Study the verse above a little more closely. Not only do we want our words to be acceptable, but also we want the meditation of our hearts to be acceptable. What does that mean? Before we form the words, we must meditate on them. As we meditate and pray for God's guidance, the words we speak will reflect that guidance and will be acceptable.
How often do we speak without thinking? How often do we try to have the last word and want that word to be a word of revenge or victory? We want to be able to say, "I really told her! I bet she won't say anything else to me." Were those acceptable words? Were they ordered by God?
If God is truly our rock and our redeemer, his strength will sustain us and our words will be acceptable.
Order my steps, dear Lord.
Lord, thank you for leading and guiding me in my meditations and my speech. Amen.
