Book Description

A family resolves to move forward after the wrenching loss of three children. How will one sister navigate her own well-concealed grief?

In the 1950's and 60's families are expected to deal with death privately and silently. This is no different for the Bernards, a large Catholic family that tries to rebuild after the loss of their three oldest children. Yet the deaths haunt the author's emotional development into adulthood with a subtle force she can only uncover in psychoanalysis while mothering her own young children.

Ollie Ollie In Come Free is an immersion in the secrets of a young girl's inner life and unexpressed grief. Brimming with memories of Midwestern childhood during an era of social upheaval, it offers moving insights into Anne Bernard Becker's personal healing journey as well as universal themes of loss and growth.

Anne Bernard Becker (b.1952) wrote Ollie Ollie In Come Free after rediscovering the rich inner world of her childhood during eight years in psychoanalysis. Always fascinated by children's complex experiences, she learned how delayed grief had impacted her development into adulthood. Throughout many years in a women's writing community, she created her memoir. Anne's mothering years were shaped by a stillbirth and other pregnancy losses, along with the rearing of two biological children and one adopted child. These experience have colored many of her writings. Since 1978 she and her husband Gerry have made their home in Cincinnati, where Anne works as a learning specialist. Anne grew up in South Bend, Indiana, and studied at Indiana University (B.A.), the University of Pennsylvania, (M.A. in French) and Fordham University (M.A. in Religious Education). She has participated in the New Jerusalem alternative Catholic community for thirty-three years, and has a passion for environmental and justice issues as well as mental health concerns. Anne continues to write regular reflections about the spiritual, psychological and political underpinnings of daily life. For the past ten years she has facilitated workshops that explore the effects of ancestral trauma on family systems. Visit www.annebernardbecker for more information.
