Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First Edition. The Observer's Book of British Ferns - Observer's Book No. 12. Printer's code: 976.349 which I believe indicates that the book was printed in Mar 1949, although the book was only officially published in 1950. The book was the twelfth in the series, being revised in 1951. There were six different jacket designs. Describing 45 species with 67 illustrations, 36 of which are in full colour. With a two-page Preface and a nineteen-page Introduction by the author. ***Near fine in light-green woven cloth-covered boards with black titles to the spine and front board. The covers are clean and unmarked, and hardly even faded at the edges. No creases or tears. Corners sharp. No bumps. Text block edges nice and clean. Internally the book is also near fine - extremely clean with no inscriptions or other annotations. Printed on nice quality glossy paper. No marks. No creases. No cracking to the binding. Spine tight. ***In a very good colour illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 5/- net. The dustwrapper is complete, with just very slight loss at the head of the spine, and slight rubbing and surface loss at the head and tail of the spine. There is just the slightest loss at the corner tips. There is some rubbing and creasing at the extremities, commensurate with age and handling. The spine is clean and unfaded. ***147mm x 95mm. 128 pages including a six-page index at the back of the book. ***'This book for the pocket provides a comprehensive guide to 45 British species of Ferns, with 36 coloured plates, and an Introduction illustrated with 19 black and white text figures. The description of each species, together with the given facts of distribution throughout the British Isles, will prove sufficient guide for the Observer to identify the majority of species to be found in this country.' [Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper] ***A beautiful example of the first edition, published in 1950 [with a 1949 printer's code], in really nice original condition. Whilst the Observer's books from this period are not uncommon, many of the books were handled by children and consequently show a lot of wear and tear. They can prove to be quite hard to track down now in such nice condition, especially in the original unclipped dustwrapper. A lovely clean copy of a desirable title, with beautiful colour illustrations. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Artikel-Nr. Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. John Clegg (Jacket photo) (illustrator). New and Revised Edition. The Observer's Book of Ferns - Observer's Book No. 12. With printer's code 1881.366 which I believe indicates that the book was printed in Mar 1966. The book was the twelfth in the series, being revised in 1951 and again in 1965. There were six different jacket designs. Describing 54 species - (N.B. the dustwrapper states 45 species!) - with colour and photographic illustrations and introductory text figures. With a Preface to the first edition, and another for the revised edition (dated April 1965), plus an eighteen-page Introduction by the author. ***This copy has the very scarce black & white (monochrome) illustrated dustwrapper - one of three titles with "Common Fungi" and "Lichens" which carried these monochrome dustwrappers - apparently only used for the last few copies in stock, issued with these dustwrappers shortly before the three titles were allowed to go out of print, around 1972. ***Near fine in pale-green textured boards with dark-blue titles to the spine and front board. The covers are nice and clean - just slightly creased at the top and tail of the spine. Corners sharp. No bumps. Page block edges nice and clean - just lightly foxed at the top edge. No reading lean to the binding. Internally the book is also near fine - extremely clean with neat ownership details on the back of the front free endpaper (see scans) but no other annotations. Printed on nice quality paper. No creases or tears. No marks. No cracking to the binding. Spine tight. ***In a near fine monochrome illustrated dustwrapper, which has been price-clipped by the publisher, with a new 75p net Warne price-sticker to the front flap. The dustwrapper is complete without any loss, with just very slight rubbing and creasing at the extremities, commensurate with age and handling - mainly at the top edges which are also slightly browned. No serious creases or tears. No chips or loss. No fading to the red titles on the spine. ***147mm x 95mm. 128 pages including a six-page index at the back of the book. ***'This book for the pocket provides a comprehensive guide to 45 British species of Ferns, with 36 colour and 36 half-tone plates, and an Introduction illustrated with 19 black and white text figures.
