Hugely successful novel. The first part appeared in 1950, the second part in 1957. Struggles of a woman with marriage, intellect, independence, and faith, presented in her letters and diary entries. Rinser is a forgotten popular novelist, but a subject of discussion for her political and moral stances during the 1930s, in post-war Catholic reform, anti-military movements, and German politics. Critics who like her praise the first novel, less so the second part with its Catholic solutions. A third novel in the series was highly criticized.
