First trade edition of this wonderful example of Victorian book production. Longman employed the finest wood-engravers of the day, and the project was overseen by the antiquary and illuminator Henry Shaw (1800-1873): "He provided initials and ornament for the prestigious New Testament published by Longman in 1864 with engravings of works by artists from Fra Angelico to Raphael" (ODNB). A limited edition of 250 large paper copies was issued in 1864. Darlow & Moule 1951 (for the 1864 large-paper edition). Small square quarto (241 x 199 mm). Illustrated throughout with full page wood-engraved illustrations by the Dalziel Brothers, Green, Cooper, Linton, and others after Old Master paintings, decorative borders throughout. Original brown morocco by Riviere, decorative gilt spine, raised bands, concentric gilt and blind tooled borders on sides, central gilt roundel, two-rule gilt turn-ins, all edges gilt. Extremities rubbed, light wear to a couple of corners, a few marks to rear cover, else gilt bright, endleaves foxed. A very good copy. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 189157
