You Can Never go Home

She was thirteen and with nothing special going for her in the looks department. Her mother was half Choctaw Indian, half German from Gooche descent living on a dirt farm just North of the Arkansas-Missouri border. Her father was a huge man, descended from Australian immigrants, named William Samuel Adams---a name of Presidents. But there was something about Nicolina Wanda Lee Adams that made her special. She had a charm that reached out and grabbed the nearest person and that person knew they had been grabbed! At seventy-five pounds, skinny and knobby-kneed her name was bigger than she. Brown hair that glinted in the afternoon sun flashed as she tossed her head to see through the too-long bangs. She was picking squash from Ma’s garden to take down the road to the Wilson’s. Sent away at an age too young to understand how truly hard real life can be, can she ever ‘go home’ again?
