In this luminous reimagining of Matsuo Bashō’s Oku no Hosomichi (The Narrow Road to the Deep North), George Myers Jr.’s The Narrowing Road joins the 17th-century master on a walk and quiet conversation across time. Each pair of prose and haiku stands not as translation, but as response — a dialogue between languages, centuries, and ways of seeing.
Bashō’s memories appear on the left-hand pages, with Myers’ English on the right, the book’s physical fold between them forming the narrow road they share. What emerges is a rhythm of attention: prose breathing toward silence, image opening into stillness.
Both homage and a meditation on willingness, Myers’ The Narrow Road reminds us that the oldest journeys are the ones still unfolding — between word and world, listener and voice, absence and return.
