Hand-tinted albumen type photo, large size: 27 x 20.5 cm., laid down on grey linen cloth, the verso blank, excellent image, no fading, clear and solid. & solid. AN OBSCURE WORK . *** **** ** . . . A GRAND IMAGE OF THE NAGOYA CASTLE . . . TAKEN BY THE FIRST JAPANESE PHOTOGRAPHER TO . . . PHOTOGRAPH THE MEIJI EMPEROR AND EMPRESS OF JAPAN . . * THE PHOTOGRAPHER: SUZUKI Shinichi II: [1855-1912]: In 1870 Suzuki aprenticed to the famous photographer Shimooka Renjo for seven years. In 1876 he left and opened his first studio in Nagoya for a period of three years. It was during this time that he photographed the nearby Nagoya Castle. After 1879 he went to America to study, when he returned to Japan in 1888, he was abltE to photograph the Emperor and Empress. See Bennett first & second entries belo . . While Bennett dates this photo in his book circa "1880's" we believe it could only have been taken during the three years when Suzuki was working in Nagoya, i.e. 1873-1879. . We would also assume it was taken around 1873, the first year Suzuki began working in that city. Our example must therefore be a bit later, as the small wooden wall was clearly a later addition, therefore we estimate this photo to be circa 1879, both taken from the exact same spot and identical angle. Both include the small house and its adajcent small shed at the back of that house. There are also three very young trees which are not found in the original. See Bennett below. . *** THE IMAGE: Shows an excellent corner view of two sides of the castle, with two large pine trees, identical in both photographs. A touch of the pale green hand-tinting evident at the bottom showing color on the grass and tree leaves. Otherwise the print has no other color except a tiny bit on the small shed behind the larger house plus a touch of blue on the roof tiles. . The image is superbly clear, in-focus, taken early morning. The one Bennett illustrates shows the castle with some shading on the roof surfaces. We believe this is an excellent example of a 'first try,' and then within the three years Suzuki stayed in Nagoya, he realized the first photo did not give the surface below the shaded roofs any clarity, he returned to take one more better shot in full sun, rathern than in the afternoon shade. Our example truly shows the contrast and is a much better image than his first try. . *** CONDITION: This image was gray linen backed, most likely it went into an album, or was planned to go into an album. It is beautifully preserved and flawless. Please view the color photos posted to our website. . *** NOTE: Color scans of this and most other items are posted to our website. . *** REFERENCES: .
