Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

31 S.; Illustr.; 15 cm; geheftet. Gutes Ex. - Englisch. - For the artist, art is a proposal for meeting, a way of countering mutism. From 1999 onwards, when presenting his first solo show Haus Deutschland, a selection of over twenty installations in and around an abandoned family house outside Berlin, Stephan Weitzel has questioned the cultural and social characteristics of the countries he has lived and worked in. Attentive to history, and more particularly to collective memory, he has scrutinised places and their specific context, sometimes installing himself there, always looking for clues for decyphering the symbolic elements of which everyday life, apparently insignificant, is composed. These investigations of national myths, starting at his own German roots, have led him to merge a number of concerns. His work essentially focuses on three interrelated aspects: contemporary mythology, the house and masculinity. The link of the individual to ihe group and of the group to other social entities is fostered by everchanging myths, rooted in only a few truths. The infiucence of the multicultural on the monocultural, particularly in contemporary society worldwide, points the way to necessary solutions for our crisis of identities. The house, as the main manmade structure in our lives, is a sign of self-construction, any construction. The house is the place where the intimate and the public meet. By extension, it also bears for the artist the essence of exile and raises the question of here and there, of the elsewhere as a hoped for better place. Male identity and the definition of what masculinity is, embrace all spectra of society. Looking at the present transformation of this identity with all it infers in terms of power structures, seduction and body shaping, means for the artist holding a touchstone of (urban) vibranee. Stephan Weitzel defends the position of the polyglot, applied to art and the artist. Fluent in both spoken and written German, French and English, with a certain command of Spanish, the artist strives at a content-based art expressed by various and varying means. Turning to a more intuitive artistic practice now, he yet considers his work as 'sensual concept art'. Today. Stephan Weitzel is firmly committed to drawing and produces sculptures, with a prediliction for textiles. On specific occasions and invitations, he continues to work on installation, produces public actions and videos as well as fictional and theoretical texts. His artistic stance and the resulting works are "to trace the physical outcome of a mental state that historical processes have generated." (S. 1) Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.…
