This book in contrast to 'absolute' music is the name usually given to the wide category of compositions which (in the author's phrase) tell a tale. It is created when the images and associations which take shape in the composer's mind are expressed musically. Thus his work may 'describe' a poem, a story, art, and aspect of nature, or a mood. Clearly the listener's appreciation of such works is greatly heightened by knowing the background of the tales they set out to tell.
