This volume presents James Willcox Alsop's lecture, "Mr. Matthew Arnold As Critic and Poet," delivered before the Liverpool Philomathic Society in 1878. Alsop offers a detailed examination of Matthew Arnold's contributions to both literary criticism and poetry, providing insights into Arnold's perspectives on literature and his own poetic works.

Alsop delves into Arnold's critical essays, analyzing his key arguments and assessing their impact on the understanding of literature. He also explores Arnold's poetry, discussing its themes, style, and significance within the context of Victorian literature. This work provides valuable perspectives on a major figure in English literary history.
