Math circles have existed for over a century at Russia's Moscow State University, as a tool for promoting the sciences. Dorichenko presents a collection of materials used over a year in a math circle for eighth graders, organized by Moscow State University mathematics faculty. Each problem set combines review material with a new topic, and contains problems of varied difficulty. Detailed solutions to each set are provided. The text includes Dorichenko's preface explaining the math circle concept, how math circles are conducted at Moscow State University, problem selection, difficulties and pitfalls, and an addendum on the Russian-style San Jose Mathematical Circle begun in late 2006. The book has been translated into English by Tatiana Shubin (MSRI/MCL Advisory Board, San Jose, California). Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
