A pleasing six volume set of the Works of English poet and playwright, John Gay, uniformly bound in quarter calf. A smart, six volume set of individual titles by John Gay, bound in matching quarter calf. The first four volumes are bound with their original title pages and are comprised of the following works: Volume I. Poems on Several Occasions. By Mr John Gay. Volume the First, 1737 (ESTC T13896). With an engraved frontispiece and further engraved plate. With numerous in-text woodcut initial letters and ornamental head and tail pieces throughout. Volume II. Poems on Several Occasions. By Mr John Gay. Volume the Second, 1737. Volume III. Fables by the Late Mr. Gay In One Volume Complete, 1788. Two parts complete in one volume. Illustrated with a frontispiece and a further thirty-four plates of sixty-eight engravings referencing Gay's fables. Volume IV. Plays Written by Mr John Gay, 1772 (ESTC T13746). Volumes V and VI here are Volumes III and IV from another set of the works of John Gay. Lacking the original title pages and thus undated: Three Hours After Marriage: A Comedy, as it was Acted at the Theatre Royal. Vol. III. With the original five page publihser's advertisement for J. Bell, bound to the rear. Poems and Translations. Vol. IV, with the contents and errata page for volumes III and IV of the original set bound to the rear, present here as Volumes V and VI. Each volume with false facsimile title page for The Miscellaneous Works of Mr. John Gay, dated 1773 with the imprint of J. Bell and Christopher Etherington, for whom there is no record of this set being published. The false title pages were likely created to give the impression of uniformity. This is a fascinating, comprehensive set of John Gay's works, the compilation and obscur history of which demonstrates both the poet's popularity and the complexities of the early modern print trade. Bound in six volumes in quarter calf. Externally, very smart with very little wear. Volumes I and II with slight handling marks to the front board. Very minor offsetting to end paper extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Each volume with a false facsimile title page. Volumes V and VI are Volumes III and IV of another set, here lacking their original title pages. Pages bright and clean with age toning as expected and the odd handling mark throughout. Damp staining to the fore edge of volume one. Very Good Indeed.
