Meet the Master ~ An Autobiography of Slim Spurling

I'm Slim Spurling, the discoverer and inventor of a couple processes which we're gonna discuss today. To give you a little bit of background on myself, I was born 1938 in South Dakota near Aberdeen. My first home there was in Bison. My folks were involved in agriculture and my dad was a county agent. Our house was just a little tarpaper shack out there on the dry flats in Bison, South Dakota.

We moved around a lot during the early years, went from Bison to Elgin, Illinois. Dad had a job with the Milwaukee Railroad as an agricultural agent; and when World War II came along, we went from army camp to army camp and spent some time in central South Dakota. I got to know all the plants in the area, and became a self-taught herbalist.

After World War II, my family moved to a small ranch near Morrison, Colorado. Prior to college, I served as a Petty Officer Third Class in the Navy Air Reserve. During that time, I had a chance meeting with the navy commander at the base barbershop. I guess my reserve record and grades impressed my commander, because he wrote a letter exempting me from monthly reserve duties. This conversation turned out to be a significant episode in my life. The next month, while flying to Olathe, Kansas, all the reservists were killed when the flight went down in a storm. Incredibly, this tragic event occurred again the next month as a second flight went down. I was grief-stricken by the loss of my friends, and awed that for some reason, my life had been spared. For the first time, I had the realization that my destiny and purpose for being were guided by forces much larger than I could imagine.

I didn't see myself making a career of the military, and after my enlistment was up, I entered college. Thought that would be a natural way to pursue my interest in the outdoors. I obtained a Bachelor of Science degree at Colorado State University, majoring in forestry and botany, and with a minor in mycology and biochemistry. I took post-graduate seminar courses in chemistry, as well.

As time went on, I became disenchanted with academics. The interest there was to find a chemical substance in the fungus world that could be grown like penicillin and produced very cheaply so that it could be put in as an unregistered and unlabeled ingredient in many different foodstuffs. The purpose of this compound, specifically, according to the details outlined in the protocols of the master's degree program, was to control the population. This was a substance that would lower the threshold of suggestibility and would perhaps have a side effect of producing a mild euphoria.

Now these effects are probably not too alarming, until one considers the social and economic and, perhaps, political considerations for the control of the population. The control of the population was exactly the design parameter of this master's degree program. Well, to make a long story short, it took me three days to locate in the literature that substance, the fungus that produced it, to grow a culture, to ingest a small amount and test it, find out that indeed the effect desired was already known in the literature, but unknown to the designers of this master's program.

Needless to say, I had some ethical and moral considerations there, and I declined to accept the program. In all honesty, I was extremely disgusted and angry to the point of near explosion, so I walked out of Colorado State University a very disillusioned and angry young man. Spent the next twenty years teaching myself the art of blacksmithing, acquired a small shop for a few hundred dollars, and began learning the ancient art of metalworking.

As it turned out, it was a wonderful exercise in alchemy - the ability to deal with four elements in their various forms and qualities - earth, air, fire, and water. So unbeknownst to me at that time, and not even in my...
