"Milton" by Mark Pattison is an authoritative and insightful biographical study of John Milton, one of the most significant figures in the history of English literature. This work provides a comprehensive exploration of Milton's life, moving from his early education and scholarly pursuits to his emergence as a formidable intellectual force during the English Civil War and the Commonwealth. Pattison skillfully balances the details of Milton's public career as a political polemicist and Latin Secretary to the Council of State with the internal development of his poetic genius.

The biography offers profound analysis of Milton's major literary contributions, including "Lycidas," "Comus," and his epic masterpiece, "Paradise Lost." Pattison examines how Milton's commitment to religious and political liberty, as well as his personal tragedies and eventual blindness, informed the sublime nature of his later verse. By placing the poet within the broader context of seventeenth-century intellectual history, the author illuminates the motivations and challenges of a man who sought to reconcile his classical training with his staunch Puritan convictions.

Renowned for its clarity and critical depth, "Milton" remains a vital resource for understanding the man behind the monumental works. It is an essential read for scholars of English literature and anyone interested in the intersection of creative mastery and revolutionary history.
