"The Meters of Quantitative Hymns in the Old and the New Breviary" is a scholarly examination of the structural and rhythmic foundations of liturgical poetry. Written by James A. Colligan, S.J., this work provides a meticulous analysis of the quantitative meters used in the hymns of the Roman Breviary, comparing the traditional versions with the revisions introduced in later liturgical reforms.

The book serves as an essential guide for students of hymnology and Latin prosody, detailing the specific rules of versification that govern these sacred compositions. By exploring various poetic forms-such as the iambic dimeter and the Sapphic stanza-the text illuminates the technical craftsmanship behind some of the most enduring hymns of the Catholic Church. Colligan's study highlights the evolution of liturgical prayer and the preservation of classical meter within a Christian context.

Whether used as a reference for clergy, scholars of ecclesiastical history, or enthusiasts of classical poetry, this volume offers profound insights into the intersection of theology and linguistic art. It remains a valuable resource for understanding the formal beauty and historical continuity of the divine office.
